Sammukha Horā

Sammukha Rāśi are based on the South Indian Chart where a line passing through Cn-Le junction and Cp-Aq junction divides the zodiac into two parts. This is the Hora-Guna line.
We notice that each of the planets Mercury, Venus, Mars and Jupiter have one sign each in the lunar (Moon) and solar (Sun) horā groups.
Recall the lesson on rāśi dṛṣṭi – the most powerful dṛṣṭi of a rāśi is on its sammukha rāśi.

• Chara rāśi has dṛṣṭi on all sthira rāśi except the one juxtapose. Of these, the sign opposite gets its greatest dṛṣṭi.
• Sthira rāśi has dṛṣṭi on all chara rāśi except the one juxtapose. Of these, the sign opposite gets its maximum dṛṣṭi.
• Dual signs have dṛṣṭi on each other. Of these, the sign owned by the same planet (Jupiter or Mercury) its greatest dṛṣṭi.

The sounds given in the table against the pairs of sammukha dṛṣṭi are based on the tattva and these are Sanskrit words.

Nomenclature Upadeśa

Since this chakra is based on sammukha dṛṣṭi, we can call it sammukha dṛṣṭi horā or simply “sammukha horā”. The Maharṣi have never use their own names or any proper nouns to denote these special chakra. Using proper nouns and names is a modern trend. In reality whenever we draw a twelve petal lotus (bha-chakra, zodiac chart), we are drawing the schematic form of Śrī Kālapuruṣa (i.e. Nārāyaṇa who is Jagannāth). It is not proper to call these charts with any proper nouns and names other than either their mathematical number names or such technical terms to differentiate them from the rāśi and other similar charts. Every divisional chart is only another aspect of Jagannāth. However, some of the names of the deviations from traditional charts do bear the names of their teachers in the modern day like Somanāth drekkāṇa etc.

Sammukha Horā Chakra

• If a body/graha is in Chandra horā, it shall be placed in one of the signs in the lunar half based on the sammukha dṛṣṭi.
• If the body/graha is in Sūrya horā, then it shall be placed in one of the signs in the solar half based on the sammukha dṛṣṭi.

Step 1: List the body/graha, sign, longitude and determine the Sammukha horā it is placed in. This placement clearly shows whether the planet is in uttara or dakṣiṇa āyana.

Step 2: Draw a chart and place the lagna, body/graha in it based on the sign mapped into the Sammukha horā. For example, Jupiter is in Pisces in Rāśi at 26°07’. This is the second horā of Pisces ruled by the Sun and will be mapped into dakṣiṇa āyana instead of uttara āyana. The sammukha rāśi for Pisces is Sagittarius and therefore, Jupiter shall be placed in Sagittarius in the SD Horā chart.

Observations

1)     Both the nodes are never opposite to each other in this SD horā chart. They are always either in uttara āyana or in dakṣiṇa āyana.
