Overview
This is the first of drekkāṇa charts based on the completion of the circle of the zodiac which is the real meaning of parivṛtti. In three steps the circle of the zodiac (360°) is to be covered implying that each step covers a trine (120°). There are different ways in which this can be done of which the first condition is whether (a) the anchor is in the sign of the lagna itself or (b) it is based on the three-fold division of signs as chara-sthira-dvisvabhāva. When the anchor is the lagna itself, then we are talking about the generations and lagna would imply same generation, 5th would imply the next generation while the 9th is the previous generation. This first type is the Parāśara drekkāṇa which shows siblings and all important such relationships of the same generation as the native. Instead if the basis is the three-fold nature of signs, then we are talking about (a) the results of karma as a reaction of the universe (nature) or (b) the nature of the individual as a part of environment and this can be his fortune as trines represent fortune. This latter is either the (a) Jagannāth Drekkāṇa or (b) Tri-guṇa drekkāṇa.
स्वपंचनवमानां च राशीनां क्रमशश्च ते।
svapaṁcanavamānāṁ ca rāśīnāṁ kramaśaśca te |
sva-self, same sign; pañca-fifth; navama-ninth; rāśīnāṁ- of or from the rāśi;
krama – (a) uninterrupted or regular progress forming an order or series like a succession order like hereditary descent, (b) progressing step by step – a peculiar manner or method of reading and writing Vedic texts (so called because the reading proceeds from the 1st member, to the 2nd , then the 2nd is repeated and connected with the 3rd and so on; this manner of reading in relation to words is called pada-krama
Translation: The three drekkāṇa of a sign are in the first, fifth and ninth from the sign reckoned in (a) uninterrupted regular progression like hereditary descent or (b) pada-krama order.
Commentary: Parāśara later defines the use of the drekkāṇa for siblings which is for hereditary descent and therefore, the Parāśara drekkāṇa [D3] is defined by (a) above which is the uninterrupted regular progression for hereditary order. Although we must bear in mind that Parāśara also defined the pada-krama order which is used for both the Jagannāth [D3-J] and Tri-guṇa [D3-T] drekkāṇa.
D3 Chart
The Parāśara Drekkāṇa mapping is very simple to remember. Every sign is divided into three drekkāṇa (decanate) of 10° each.
- the first drekkāṇa from 0°-10° and is in the same sign;
- the second drekkāṇa from 10°-20° is in the fifth sign;
- the third drekkāṇa from 20°-30° is in the ninth sign

Now draw a chart where we place Lagna in Cancer, Sun in Pisces, Moon in Gemini and so on till Prāṇapada (PP) in Capricorn. This is the Parāśara Drekkāṇa chakra.

Mark the following planets –
- Nitya Kāraka (Constant significator): Mars
- Anitya Kāraka: Temporal significator = Dispositor of 3rd lord of rāśi chart = Dispositor of Venus = Moon
- Kārya Bhāva: Function house = 3rd house of both Rāśi (Taurus) and Drekkāṇa (Virgo) chart
- Kāryeśa: Lord of the 3rd house of rāśi chart is Venus, this is the Kāryeśa, the controller of linkages between siblings. If this planet is afflicted all relationships shall suffer and the siblings drift apart.
Individual siblings: Siblings are connected with blood = Moon (Janma rāśi)
- Immediate elder sibling: 11th bhāva from Lagna in D3 chart = Taurus, Lord Venus conjoins Jupiter in Scorpio. [Native has one elder brother having Janma rāśi (Moon) Scorpio]
- All good and bad for elder brother is seen from Scorpio
- Immediate younger sibling: 3rd bhāva from Lagna in D3 chart = Virgo, Lord Mercury is in Sagittarius. [Native has one younger brother having Janma rāśi (Moon) Leo which is trines to Sagittarius.
- All good and bad for younger brother is seen from Sagittarius
