Warning: There are words in here which you may not understand, like argalā or ārūḍha. This will be taught in later years of this course.
The fourth house is a quadrant and form one of the four pillars on which the horoscope is founded. It rules such vital matters as mother (significator: Moon), Vehicles (significator: Venus home & buildings (significator: Ketu) land (significator: Mars), motherland (significator: Venus), Childhood, wealth from real estate, land like mining, Petrol etc, education significator: Mercury especially formal education, relatives (esp. Maternal) happiness (significator: Jupiter & Venus for luxuries etc. Thus, a proper examination of the fourth house will require an in depth examination of a number of divisional charts. These include the Caturthāṁśa (D-4) wherein home and properties are studied Dvādaśāṁśa (D-12) for mother and other elders comprising the cultural heritage, Śoḍasāṁśa (D-16) for vehicles and all other luxuries that make living comfortable, Horā (D-2) for wealth that would accrue from real estate, Dasāṁśa (D-10) that is examined for profession that would be related to real estate/ mining etc., Caturvimśāṁśa (D-24) wherein the formal and informal education and other skills learnt are examined, Khavedāṁśa (D-40) wherein the good and evils from maternal relatives and Karma inherited from the mothers side is examined, and Akṣavedāṁśa (D-45) wherein the karma inherited from paternal elder relatives is examined.
If the Sun is in the fourth, the happiness is reduced unless the fourth is Leo or such sign where the Sun is strong like Aries. The native is called upon to take a number of responsibilities on account of parents and proves to be an ideal child in that Sense. The argalā of the Sun on the ascendant produces a good soul and god fearing disposition, gives a robust personality fond of pomp, show & glitter.
The Moon in the fourth house gives a happy disposition and good learning. Being a watery planet Jaimini ascribes travels like river, lake or sea voyages to this position of the Moon. Unless afflicted by Saturn the native is blessed by his mother and is always fortunate being helped by ladies. Since Jupiter gets exalted in the fourth house of the natural zodiac, some astrologers add the birth of a son to this position of the moon. However the general principle to time birth is to see the trines, 7th & 12th houses from the concerned bhāva (house). For example, if the birth of children is being predicted, the planets in trines to the 5th house, its 7th & 12th houses can give the birth of a child. Thus, the birth of a child can occur during the period of a Moon in the fourth house as it is the twelfth from the fifth house. The native shall be religious and respectful priests.
Mars in the fourth is considered an unfortunate combination. By its nature it will give poverty, anger, family disturbances especially for parents, troubles, problems pertaining to real estate business, instability of residence and a dilapidated/broken down/badly located home, great labour in childhood etc. Since it has argalā on the ascendant the traits of Mars like bellicose disposition, short temper, hard heartedness etc. will be seen in the native and will mark a period of misfortunes. However, if Mars is placed in its own signs ownership of lands and properties is assured while if placed in Cancer or Taurus, the negative impact on the nature of the native is negligible as the fire of Mars is quenched.
Some astrologers opine that Mercury in the fourth is ineffective. Excellent vehicles and wealth are assured as well as good education. As Mercury rules the speech, the native may have oratorical skills or may be a singer. Since the fourth is the place of mating, it is likely to give many love affairs and disturbances at home. He may be troubled by his paternal inheritance and tends to accumulate useless items like a child.
A well placed Jupiter in the fourth house gives education, home, happiness, vehicles, properties etc. Its argalā on the ascendant works like a divine shield against various evils and can give name, fame and reputation. A happy home is vouchsafed. Early life will be easy, luxurious and peaceful and parents will be a great asset.
Venus in the fourth gives excellent friends, properties, vehicles, spouse, home and happiness. The childhood is very happy and comfortable and the parents are fortunate. Education is also very good. If Venus is with Ketu and Mars in the second or fourth house a rājayoga is constituted that will begin functioning in early life.
Conversely Saturn in the fourth causes one to be selfish, conceited and hard hearted. The home is dirty or dilapidated. Besides causing argalā on the ascendant, Saturn also aspects the same indicating a lazy person who will always be troubled due to his own errors/ isolation. He is overburdened with work (planet in fourth aspects the tenth) and is always pulled down due to the same as well as domestic bickering. Even if well aspected or conjoined, Saturn cannot give permanent happiness. Sorrow, especially in childhood is assured. The source of sorrow is seen from planets/signs influencing Saturn. For example, if the Moon conjoins Saturn the early demise of Mother could be a shock to the young child. A lot of physical effort will be required to achieve success and depending on signs, yogas etc., the same may come late in life.
Rāhu in the fourth can be damaging for all matters of the fourth house unless exalted or in own sign (Aquarius). Unless the Moon is placed in the fourth or twelfth house or in strength, early demise of mother may occur. Even in such places, the Moon should have pakṣa bala and should not be in gaṇḍānta or dagdha or śūnya tithi. The native may be addicted to pleasures and could, consequentially take to bad ways thereby ultimately seeing a lot of sorrow. Since Rāhu will have argalā on the second, it will influence wealth and sudden rise/fall in the same will occur. Rāhu in the fourth can either produce a saint or a fraud depending on the nature of the planets in the ascendant. If sāttvika planets like the Sun, Moon or Jupiter are in the ascendant, a saint is produced. Contrarily, if tamasic planets like Mars and Saturn occupy the ascendant, a fraud is produced. Rājasik planets Venus and Mercury will give results on the basis of placement, conjunction aspects etc.
Ketu in the fourth is auspicious for landed properties and buildings and income from the same. However, associates and friends could belong to the lower categories and the native will be luxuriant. Troubles in inheritance and family peace are indicated. The native will be hard hearted and short tempered and will tend to ascribe to groups or gangs. Ketu in Sagittarius is considered auspicious.
There are other small riders that should be borne in mind. For example, the fourth Lord in the eighth house is always bad excepting the Sun in Sagittarius where, as the fourth Lord it will surely give properties in foreign lands. If the fourth Lord conjoins/ aspects any of the significators like the Moon, Mars, Ketu etc., such signification of the fourth house is enhanced. For example the fourth Lord conjoining Mercury and the Moon gives Sāradā Yoga (a name of Goddess Sarasvatī the divine teacher) and great learning, writing etc., is indicated in the chart. If instead it conjoins Mars or Ketu, lands/buildings are obtained and Venus conjoining gives excellent vehicles while Jupiter gives happiness and prosperity. The relationship with one’s mother shall depend on the placement of the fourth lord from lagna lord as well as from the Moon. It will also depend upon the placement of the Moon from Āruḍha Lagna. If the Moon is in the 7th or 12th from Āruḍha Lagna, there is friction/losses due to one’s mother and hence, relationship is not smooth. Similarly if the Moon is so placed from Upapada, the friction/losses are due to mother -in-law.
The placement of the fourth Lord from the fourth house also indicates the source of happiness etc. or its denial. For example, if the fourth lord is in the twelfth house, it will be in the ninth from the fourth house and the native will be denied happiness from father.
Sibling Rivalry
Male born on 13th November 1957 at 5 am at Delhi (28N39, 77E13).

Kārya bhāva: Rāśi (D1) Capricorn with its lord Saturn in Scorpio in bādhaka sthāna from it. Capricorn has the graha dṛṣṭi of Jupiter, which as the 6th lord may bring in troubles with elder siblings having wrong desires on his property share. The aspect of Mars as bhūmi kāraka on its sign of exaltation is good for properties but as a dire malefic (māraka) for Libra lagna, its aspect on the 4th house will bring suffering related to home and property, especially since Mars conjoins the bādhakeśa Sun in debility eclipsed by Rāhu.
Kāraka: 4th lord of Rāśi chart Saturn is not in own sign and is instead in Scorpio. Therefore, the dispositor of Saturn i.e. lords of Scorpio (Mars or Ketu) shall act as the anitya kāraka (instead of nitya kāraka). Since Mars is stronger than Ketu, it shall be the anitya kāraka. In this particular case we do not have conflict as Mars is also the nitya kāraka (natural or naisargika kāraka). Note that the kāraka is afflicted by 11th lord (also bādhakeśa) in debility in rāśi chart and also conjoined its terrible enemy Rāhu confirming cheating by elder siblings.
Caturthāṁśa: In D4 Chart, Mars is exalted in the 4th house which promises good properties in the family and as such the placement of Saturn in the 8th house would promise inheritance. But as 4th lord in 8th house, Saturn also shows some struggle related to inheritance.
There is graha-mālikā yoga (garland yoga) formed by planets stationed in a line from Mars in Capricorn to Sun and Moon in Cancer. All planets would have to obey the dictates of these starting (Mars) and ending (Moon, Sun) planets in the yoga. The start of the yoga in the 4th house with Mars in exaltation shows the extent of properties involved. The ending shows the beneficiary as 10th lord Moon, which can be mother on the one hand and 11th lord Sun showing elder siblings on the other hand. The native is indicated by Venus, which is in exaltation showing high ideals in this matter and being in maraṇa kāraka sthāna, the native will die a thousand times with the pain that the cheating of elder siblings brings to his basket of life experiences. Venus is also the dispositor of Saturn in the 8th house and can bring in some blessings of inheritance. However, he will have to work through either Moon or Sun who are controlling the graha-mālikā yoga.
Jupiter is the 6th lord and dispositor of Venus aspects it by rāśi dṛṣṭi. As 6th lord aspecting the 8th lord, it can show litigation of property or such forced losses. Mercury as 12th lord is not good either.
Conclusion: When the native met the scribe in November 1997 it was clearly stated that professionally he would have suffered a severe setback and that in the last six years in spite of all remedial measures like using blue sapphire and emerald (!) the native would have lost property that would have been taken over by the elder siblings. In fact by using blue sapphire (Saturn) the 4th lord in 8th house duryoga would have got activated and emerald (Mercury) activates the 3rd and 12th houses. The vibrations of these planets causing losses is aggravated. Instead a white sapphire would be ideal to harmonize the beneficial influences of Venus by strengthening its jala tattva thereby also using Moon (jala tattva) to bring in some blessings of property into his life.
Recap: Why was the rivalry with elder siblings? Saturn aspects the Sun (11th Lord) showing the rivalry with elder siblings stemming from ego problems. Here the Moon conjunction is showing the Mother (as significator) and one who is taking sides with the elder siblings. Saturn also aspects the 12th and 9th lord Mercury showing such relations who can also get into a conflict situation with the native.
Ambani Brothers
When Mr.A.D. asked me about the estates of the late Dhirubhai Ambani and the rivalry between the siblings, I had maintained that settlement will be made by Mukeshbhai Ambani (elder sibling) and although the world would think that the brothers will destroy themselves, I maintained that they were one and would soon be together. Finally this prediction proved true and they united by the grace of Śrī Kṛṣṇa. Let us see the caturthāṁśa to study the inheritance.

Mukesh Ambani has Libra lagna with Saturn in the 8th house promising huge inheritance but just like the previous case it can show some conflict if it associated with the lords of 11th or 3rd house of elder or younger siblings. In this case, Mukeshbhai is the eldest and 3rd lord Jupiter would indicate the younger brother Anil Ambani. Jupiter conjoins Saturn in the 8th house showing the conflict with younger brother.
Ven-Mer July 2002: Dhirubhai Ambani, founder of the Reliance business empire, dies. Mukesh Ambani becomes chairman and managing director of Reliance Industries Ltd, and Anil Ambani is made vice-chairman. Venus is lagneśa joining exalted 11th lord Sun and Mercury is the 9th lord conjoining the 2nd lord Ketu in 4th house. These planets work together to produce a fortune worth many billion dollars and the Ambani’s are arguably world’s richest family. On Dec 28, 2002 Shareholders get their first hint of a family feud as only Mukesh Ambani is present at the launch of Reliance Infocomm. Younger brother Anil is absent amid rumours that he is unhappy at being edged out of crucial company decisions.
Ven-Jup June 17, 2004: Anil Ambani files nomination for Rajya Sabha and eventually gets elected as an independent Member of Parliament. Mukesh does not approve of this political step of Anil. Jupiter is the 3rd lord and is likely to bring some fortune to the younger brother.
Ven-Jup July 17, 2004 Reliance Industries board votes to give Mukesh the right to make all investment decisions. Anil says move lacked “proper” discussion implying that the decision was bulldozed.
Sat-Sat Nov 2004: With the advent of Saturn daśā the feud between the brothers becomes public. The more conservative Mukesh is adverse to splitting the companies while Anil wants control over his share of the fortune. On Nov 16, 2004 Mukesh tells a television channel that his company faces “ownership issues”. The next day Reliance stock falls by 3.4 per cent (group’s market capitalisation drops by $550 million). Mercury is also the 12th lord and loose talk can see fortunes dwindling. M.L. Bhakta, a Reliance director since 1977, resigns, triggering further speculation. Later in June 2005 family reaches a settlement to split the Reliance group in a deal brokered by their mother Kokilaben and ICICI Bank CEO K.V. Kamath.
Sat-Rāhu 2006: Formal split takes place, with Mukesh taking control of flagship Reliance Industries, with interests in petrochemicals, oil and gas exploration, refining and textiles. He has since launched a retail venture. Anil gets telecoms, power, entertainment and financial services. The Anil Dhirubhai Ambani Group includes Reliance Communications Ltd, Reliance Infrastructure Ltd, Reliance Capital Ltd, Reliance Natural Resources Ltd (RNRL) and Reliance Power Ltd. Rāhu antardaśā is an unreliable period for peace as both Saturn and Rāhu show ‘bheda niti’ and instead indicates some deadly battles to come as Rāhu infuses the deal with all sorts of doubts like a ‘non-compete agreement’ and which becomes the bone of contention. The battle rages on as Mukesh is definitely unhappy to lose his baby Reliance Infocomm.
Sat-Moon Jan 2008 Feud is reignited over an agreement for Mukesh’s exploration company to sell gas to Anil’s power company at discounted rate for 17 years. The Gas deal was vetoed by the then petroleum minister Murli Deora who says neither company has the right to trade the government’s gas at discounted rates. Anil publicly accuses Deora of being in league with his brother! He wrote: “Typically the government intervenes to bring down consumer prices or increase its own revenues. The Petroleum Ministry’s actions unfortunately do neither. The lone beneficiary is Reliance Industries.” Anil’s proposed 4,000 Megawatt gas power station, would end power cuts in New Delhi and naturally he gets public sympathy and the elder brother is seen as a bully. However, we must not forget that a price agreement for 17 years was quite impractical in the first place and looks like Mukesh was pushed into it. Pranab Mukherjee, the senior Finance Minister said it was a matter of “national interest” for the brother’s to resolve their dispute privately.
Name Reversal Upadeśa
A friend of the family said the dispute was a “Shakespearean tragedy,” which had its roots in tensions between Anil and Mukesh’s wives Nita and Tina. From an astrology perspective, when names letters are reversed it shows a ‘Rāhu relationship’ with jealousies and accusations. In fact the holy name Rāma is the automatic counter to the worst maraṇa tantra called ‘māra’ as the syllables ‘ra’ and ‘ma’ are reversed. But then, this is not permanent as the stars speak a stronger language.
Sat-Moon July 2008: Reliance Communications calls off merger talks with South Africa’s MTN after Mukesh makes a claim on the shares of Anil’s telecom firm leading to a stalemate and Anil has no options. By now, the younger Anil Ambani is fuming at two direct hits from elder brother.
June 15, 2009: Mumbai’s High Court directs Reliance Industries and RNRL to enter a gas supply agreement within a month.
